Show a time box. Something like: I gave myself forty minutes, then I asked with a written summary of what I had already tried.
How do you know you actually understood it rather than copying a pattern?
Point to a moment where you predicted what would happen and were right, for example reading a plan output before applying it.
What would you do differently next time?
Pick one honest thing, for example that you would have built the sandbox on day one instead of day two.
What the interviewer is listening for
- Names a specific technology and a specific deadline
- Describes narrowing scope rather than learning everything
- Built something small and ran it, rather than only reading
- Time boxed being stuck and asked a precise question
What sinks the answer
- Says 'I am a fast learner' with no evidence behind it
- No artefact, nothing was actually built or shipped
- Cannot say how long anything took
- Claims they never got stuck at any point
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
