Tell me about a time you disagreed with a senior engineer. What did you do?
What they are really testing: They want to see whether you can hold a technical opinion without turning it into a fight, and whether you know that evidence beats volume.
A real interview question
Tell me about a time you disagreed with a senior engineer. What did you do?
What most people say
drag me
“I am pretty easy going, so I just went with what the senior engineer said. They had more experience than me, so they were probably right.”
It reads junior because it treats seniority as evidence, gives the interviewer no thinking to look at, and quietly says you will stay silent when you see a problem.
The follow-ups they ask next
What if he had said no even after seeing your chart?
Say you would ask what evidence would change his mind, then either accept the call and log the risk, or escalate the data, not the personality.
Have you ever been the one who was wrong in a disagreement like this?
Have a real example ready. Owning a wrong call cheerfully is a strong signal, not a weak one.
Why did you go to him privately instead of raising it in the channel?
Explain that private lowers the cost of changing your mind for both people, and public is for the decision, not the debate.
What the interviewer is listening for
- Tested the claim instead of arguing about it
- Chose a private channel first to keep the disagreement cheap
- Framed the objection around user impact, not personal preference
- Was willing to be proved wrong by the data
What sinks the answer
- Deferring purely because the other person is senior
- Escalating to a manager before ever talking to the person
- Describing the senior engineer as arrogant or stupid
- No evidence, only I had a bad feeling about it
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
“I have not had a big clash with a senior yet, but here is how I would handle it. I would check whether my worry is testable, spend a short time box measuring it, and take that one measurement to them privately with a specific concern.”
