Where do you want to be in three years?
What they are really testing: They are asking whether your ambition fits the shape of this job, and whether you will still be here in eighteen months or using the role as a stepping stone you have not mentioned.
A real interview question
Where do you want to be in three years?
What most people say
drag me
“In three years I would like to be in a senior or lead position, ideally moving toward architecture or management.”
It names titles instead of work, it is indistinguishable from every other candidate's answer, and it quietly tells the interviewer you are measuring the job by how fast you can leave it.
The follow-ups they ask next
That sounds like it could point at management. Is that where you are heading?
Be honest about which you lean toward, and say you want to earn technical trust first. Do not pretend you have never thought about it.
What if the work here is not glamorous for the first year?
Welcome it. Say the unglamorous work is where you learn the system, and give an example of dull work you took on and improved.
What would make you leave in twelve months?
Answer straight. Say what would have to be missing, such as no ownership or no mentorship, and ask them what growth actually looks like on this team.
What the interviewer is listening for
- Describes work and responsibility rather than job titles
- Backs the ambition with something already done in the last year
- Names a concrete measurable improvement they drove
- Explains specifically why this team makes the plan plausible
What sinks the answer
- A title ladder with no description of the work involved
- Ambition that has no evidence behind it yet
- A plan that clearly does not need this company at all
- No curiosity about what growth looks like on this team
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
“I do not want to give you a title, so let me describe the kind of engineer I am trying to become. Here is what I want to be trusted with, here is the one thing I have done that points that way, and here is what I would need from this team to get there.”
