Interview prep

Company pack · Amazon India

The Amazon India loop, round by round.

SDE and cloud support roles · the Leadership Principles loop

Amazon runs the most standardised big-tech loop in India: an online assessment, then interview rounds where every single one, including the coding rounds, spends real time on behavioural questions mapped to the Leadership Principles. Prep that ignores the behavioural half fails the loop.

Every round, and how to prep it

  1. 1

    Online assessment

Two DSA problems plus a work-style survey. The DSA sits at classic medium difficulty: arrays, hashing, two pointers, BFS.

  2. 2

    Coding rounds (1-2)

Live DSA on a shared editor, narrated, plus 10-15 minutes of Leadership Principle questions inside the same hour.

The quirk: Narration is graded. Practise saying your approach out loud before you type, silence reads as being lost.

  3. 3

System design (experienced) or CS fundamentals (freshers)

Design a system at the level of your seniority, or OS/networks/DB fundamentals for new grads.

  4. 4

    Behavioural, woven through every round

Tell-me-about-a-time questions mapped to specific Leadership Principles, probed with the follow-up ladder.

The quirk: STAR format with numbers is the house dialect: situation and stakes fast, your action in first person, result quantified.

  5. 5

    Bar Raiser

An interviewer from outside the team with veto power, usually the hardest behavioural round, hunting for depth and honesty.

The quirk: This round exists to catch rehearsed answers. A story you actually lived survives the fourth follow-up; a borrowed one does not.

What candidates get wrong here

Everyone preps LeetCode; almost nobody preps stories to Amazon depth. The follow-ups go three levels down: what did YOU decide, what was the number before and after, what would you do differently. That is exactly the shape the story builder forces, five stories with figures survive this loop, vibes do not.

How this company differs

The Leadership Principles are not HR decoration, they are the scoring rubric. Interviewers are assigned specific principles to probe and write evidence against them. A technically strong candidate with vague stories loses to a decent one with sharp, quantified stories, and the Bar Raiser round exists specifically to enforce that.
